Davey Sleeps in Church

There was a time when little Davey showed a tender heart toward the things of God. He loved attending church with his parents, eagerly answered questions in Sunday school, and listened attentively to the preaching of Pastor Charles.

At home, he often asked about the Bible, about God, and about heaven. Each night before bed, Davey would kneel and pray a simple prayer: “Dear Lord, please give me the gift of Salvation, and please keep my Mom and Dad safe and take us all to heaven.” In those early years, Davey’s heart reflected both a childlike faith and a desire to please God.

As he grew older, however, his interest in spiritual things began to fade. Sunday school no longer drew his enthusiasm, and instead of listening to sermons, he was often caught sleeping in church. While Pastor Charles faithfully preached on man’s sin, the need for forgiveness, repentance, and the cross of Christ, Davey remained unmoved. Others in the congregation listened with great seriousness, but Davey’s heart seemed closed.

Even his parents’ pleas, encouragement, and correction did little to stir him. The joy he once showed in the things of God was now reserved for the pleasures of the world.

That indifference eventually hardened into stubbornness, and stubbornness gave way to open rebellion—against his parents and against the Lord. It grieved his family deeply to see the child they had raised in the fear of God turn toward the ways of the world. Because of his unrepentant heart, the Lord allowed Davey to be drawn away from the light he once knew.

Those who knew him still remember the prayers of his childhood and the tenderness he once showed toward the Lord. But now, the question remains: what will become of Davey? Will he continue down the path that leads away from God, or will he remember the prayers of his youth and turn back before it is too late? Only God knows.

Many like Davey start with a tender heart toward the Lord, yet the cares and pleasures of this world slowly draw them away. Let his story be a sober reminder that a soft heart can become hardened if one turns from the truth. May we all guard our hearts and stay near to the Savior, lest we too drift away.
